Kedah State Art Gallery – A Masterpiece Restored

In the heart of Alor Setar, northern Malaysia, the Kedah State Art Gallery stands as a remarkable fusion of ancient Roman grandeur and Far Eastern elegance. Built between 1893 and 1912, this architectural icon has witnessed generations of history, culture, and transformation. Officially opened by Sultan Abdul Hamid Halim of Kedah, the building was celebrated as Alor Setar’s first modern government structure, symbolising progress and cultural pride in the early 20th century. Its design is distinguished by a series of grand pillars adorned with intricate vertical carvings and doors that proudly display the emblem of Kedah.
